When her parents divorced in 1976, Jolie and her brother, James Haven were brought up by their mother. Marcheline Bertrand had abandoned her acting by that time and had moved to Palisades, New York. Child Jolie was very much fond of collecting snakes and lizards at that time. She started getting towards her acting career when the 'half family' moved back to Los Angeles when she was 11. There she got herself enrolled at the "Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute" and stayed there for the next two years. Her mother looked after the house with a modest income and Jolie recalls that she mostly wore second-hand clothes. Jolie faced a lot of difficulties when she started out with her career. She was teased by other students who also targeted her for her distinctive features, for being extremely thin, and for wearing glasses. Most of her initial attempts at modeling also proved unsuccessful. Out of growing despondency, she even started to cut herself to get her depression out. She commented ""I collected knives and always had certain things around. For some reason, the ritual of having cut myself and feeling the pain, maybe feeling alive, feeling some kind of release, it was somehow therapeutic to me". At this age she was almost a Punk as she recalls and says "I am still at heart just a punk kid with tattoos". At 14, Jolie was signed with "Finesse Model Management" and modeled in both the United States and Europe, working mainly in Los Angeles, New York and London. After many brief appearances in music videos, Jolie played her first role as "German dominatrix" in a Theatre Play. At this timespan she also appeared in five student made by her brother. But her first professional Film career began with her main role in a low budget movie "Cyborg 2". That was in the year 1993. In 1995, she starred as "Kate" with Jonny Lee Miller (who was soon to become her first husband) in "Hackers", her first Hollywood Picture. In the following years, Jolie did many Hollywood movies including Love Is All There Is, Romeo and Juliet, Mojave Moon, Playing God and also in the TV movie 'True Women'. In 1997, Jolie won a Golden Globe Award for her role as Cornelia Wallace in "George Wallace" and was also nominated for an Emmy. 1998 marked the release of HBO's Gia (depicting a world of sex, drugs and emotional drama, and chronicled the destruction of Gia Carangi's life). Starting with this role, Jolie started to get all the attention. She won the 'Screen Actors Guild Award' during this time. Then in 2001, Jolie strike the screen with her all time famous movie "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" which made her an international superstar. 'Original Sin', 'Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life' (2003) and action-comedy 'Mr. & Mrs Smith' (her 2005 grand success) are other movies which contributed to her super success. Off-screen, Jolie take a lot of interest in helping out and working in the humanitarian line. She visited different refugee camps around the world to learn more about the situation and the conditions in these areas. She donated $1 million for Afghan refugees in response to an international UNHCR emergency appeal. Greatly impressed by her interest and devotion in the subject, UNHCR named her a Goodwill Ambassador on August 27, 2001 at UNHCR headquarters in Geneva. She also adopted her first child, Maddox Chivan Jolie-Pitt (originally Rath Vibol, born in Cambodia, living in a local orphanage in Battambang) on March 10, 2002. She adopted another child, six-month-old girl from Ethiopia, Zahara Marley Jolie-Pitt, who was orphaned by AIDS. On May 27, 2006, Jolie gave birth to a daughter named Shiloh Nouvel Jolie-Pitt in Swakopmund, Namibia and her proud father Pitt was there to cut her umbilical cord. Report says that the first pictures of Shiloh sold for a mark of $10 million worldwide through the distributor 'Getty Images' – the most expensive celebrity image of all time. |
